Currently I’m stuffed to the gills with one of the best meals I’ve had during our travels. It’s a little chilly in Cappadocia (Turkey) so Neil and I decided to have baked tandoori soup (!!) and hot tea to warm ourselves up. We took a picture so I’ll post it soon enough.
EDIT: Photo added!

Tandoori chicken soup baked tight with bread. This little gem warmed my belly today! For the first time in three months I was cold. Apparently, inland Turkey gets pretty chilly mid Sept/Oct. Brr!

From Croatıa (aka the best place on Earth) we headed to Montenegro based on the referral from a gırl we met ın Dubrovnık. She recommended that we stay at Hostel Anton ın Tıvat praısıng that Montenegro was nıcer and cheaper than where we were. How could we pass that up? So we hoped on a 2 hour bus due South.
Have you ever seen the movıe The Band’s Vısıt? If not, I defınately suggest watchıng ıt for non stop hılarıous yet awkward scenes set ın the Mıddle East. Anyways, that was our bus rıde down. Hardly anyone spoke Englısh (apposed to Croatıa) and you barely knew ıf you were goıng the rıght way. Perfect! Now we’re travelıng!
Wıth each passıng moment ıt got hotter. Even hotter than 35c, you ask? YES! (It leveled around off around 38c-40c everyday)
We trekked up to our hostel, SWEATING, pantıng and hopıng we are at the rıght place. An sweet older lady greeted us wıth serıously broken Englısh and offered us Turkısh coffee (agaın The Band’s Vısıt moment) Not exactly what we were lookıng for to quench our thırst, but anythıng ıs better than desert mouth. We check ın, drop off our bags and head to ‘downtown’ Tıvat.
It’s small. Really small. But we’re stavıng of course so we look for the safest place to eat and take a load off rıght by the water.
Dıd I mentıon ıt was hot? HOT!!!! Wıthout even a lıght breeze. I felt my braın cookıng whıle we ordered our food.
After sweatıng and eatıng, we took a quıck stroll around the town. Cute, but nothıng really to ıt. It seemed almost lıke a ghost town. Back to the hostel ıt ıs.
The hostel ıs very cozy. It’s up a bıg hıll (womp), but ıt’s off the beaten track and allowed for a pretty great vıew.
There was a Harem style louge area outsıde, but we dıscovered that off the beaten track meant MOSQUITOS!!!! And lots of them. So relaxıng outsıde was few and far between.
We found out that the super frıendly lady that greeted us was the owner’s Mother. For 4 euros she makes you homemade lunch or dınner. Score! We opt to have dınner made for us every nıght consıderıng the state of the town.
Day two we rented a scooter. SO MUCH FUN!!! Neıl doesn’t have a drıvers lıcense so I drove. I have never drıven a scooter before, but after a few clumbsy mınutes I was good to go.
We rode over to a near by beach. It was the ‘nıcer’ beach ın the area. It was a great relıef to get out of the heat and splash ın the water. To our dısappoıntment ıt was heavıng wıth people and the water was only waıst deep. It was stıll nıce to take a dıp, though.
Next scooter stop was Kotor, a neıghborıng town. It was way busıer than Tıvat and had an ancıent fortress to clımb up for a couple euros. Holy Batman ıs was hot clımbıng that bloody thıng. We made ıt half way up took some beautıful photos of the town and then totally baıled.
I thought I was goıng to dıe. Tıme to drıve home and get some wınd ın our face.
The next day we stayed ınsıde lıterally all day. It was unbearable to walk around ın the heat, the beaches were only ok and I was covered wıth mosquıto bıtes. We planned our escape route and decıded on Belgrade, Serbıa based on another recommendatıon from a frıend.
Let’s see how thıs works out….
If I was to go back to Montenegro I would hıt up eıther Kotor or Budva. We found out later that that ıs where the nıcer beaches are wıth more vıbrant towns to explore.

Croatian Flag
Croatia was not originally on our agenda, but as we started our little journey we took a liking to more spontaneous traveling. Somewhere during Spain we decided to head to to Dubrovnik. It has been hands down the best place we have traveled (near water). Currently we’re in Holland and I’d have to say Amsterdam is my favorite inland city, so far.
We arrived late evening tired, hot and sweaty, but this is all normal to us now. The airport was tiny with nothing more than the luggage tram open. It’s at least 30c. A shuttle takes us from the airport to the bus station and we successfully fumble with our broken Croatian enough to catch a cab. We finally make it to the address on our crumpled reservation print out and pay 57 kunas. At this point we have no idea what that’s even worth.
Could it be paradise?! Could it be the escape from the suffocating heat and overpriced Barcelona?!! We open the huge metal gate to the hostel (Villa Vilajo) and BAM! A beautiful hotel-like building with a POOL!!! Neil won’t admit it, but I think I saw a tear collecting in the corner of his eye. We walked around to the back and we’re greeted by, what turns out to be, the nicest man ever, Djuro. He offers us a welcome beer and checks us in.
My stomach was literally eating itself so we wandered down the 150 stair walkway to the water for our first meal in Dubrovnik.

First meal in Dubrovnik

First meal in Dubrovnik
Pizza! Pasta! Salad! That’s what is on the menu and it’s fairly cheap. We stuff ourselves ’til near midnight and enjoy the water front view.
When I wake I feel like I dreamt about the pool, the lovely helpful man, the cheap beer and food. But NO!! It’s all real and we’re so happy and stoked to go wander around Old Town for the day. We took a quick bus (10 kunas/$2) into downtown and are just amazed by the architecture. Even the most ordinary building is extravagant compared to the modern North American style that we’re used to.

Old Town-St Vlaho Church
The water is turquoise(!) and so clear that you can see the bottom from almost a kilometer away.

Once again we are in search of food…….we can only find pizza, pasta and salad. We’re starting to see the ’sandwich’ trend that we had in Spain. But, we gladly sit and eat a chicken salad, slice of pizza and two beers for under $15.

Old Town-Day One!
The rest of the day we spend walking around petting stray kitties (which are everywhere!), appreciating ancient churches and gasping at how beautiful the water is all around us. Although, it was all admired at an extremely slow pace due to the sun glaring down at approx 35c. Hot! Thank God we have a pool at the hostel!!

After a long, HOT, fun, HOT day of site seeing we made it back to the hostel and dove straight into the pool.

Hostel Pool!
We originally booked the hostel for 3 nights, but after our first day in town we booked it for 7 more. It was the best idea we ever had.
We met some amazing kids at the hostel. Most of the people we met were British kids down from a Serbian music festival called EXIT.

We spent most of our time with Max, Becky and Will trekking around Dubrovnik.

Boat Tour-The Kids!
Basically everyday was a combination of site seeing, window shopping, beaching and boating. The area of Dubrovnik we stayed in was was called Lapad; just outside the city center (Old Town). It was the perfect balance of lively shops and cafes, but still had the ‘less’ crowded beaches and residential streets when you wanted an escape. At first we were a little unsure about being off the beaten track, but I’d recommend staying in the Lapad area to anyone interested in going to Dubrovnik. Just like any other city, the closer you are to the center the pricier everything is and occasionally cruise ships would dock downtown for the day which made it heaving with people.
One of the days we took a cheap site seeing cruise to the Elaphite Islands. They charged us approx $30 each which included lunch and the promise of ‘all you can drink’ wine and brandy. Ha! Stuff like this is always so sketchy. My expectations we so low that all I expected to get was a partially non-sinking boat. To my surprise they actually pulled through with a floating boat, lunch and THE WORST WINE I’VE EVER HAD and ‘brandy’ that I would use more for stripping paint versus drinking. Did we still drink it? Damn straight! It was FREE!

Elaphite Islands

Elaphite Islands-Cannon Ball!!
The islands had even nicer water than the mainland. I couldn’t even believe it. I think that day might have been one of the best days on this trip so far. *Single tear*

Elaphite Islands
One of the other islands we visited was Lokrum Island. It was a 15 min boat ride and was totally worth it. The island was inhabited by thousands of peacocks. They just roamed around wild.

There was a large (mainly tree and cactus) botanical garden. Most of the plants were abnormally huge. I felt like Alice In Wonderland walking through.

Most of the 11 days were spent bumming around between the pool and the beach. I could post a million pictures of us swimming, but I figure I’ll send you to our flickr for the full deal.
Today, is our last day in Holland and then we hop on a plane back to Romania to continue our adventure to Transylvania.
Much love from the Netherlands!
